Story of Theerthadarshi

King Vikramarka, gets on to the tree one more time to bring Bhethal. Bhethal started saying a new story again. He repeats his condition before telling the story that if he says answer Bhethal will fly back to tree and if he didn’t say answer even though he knows his head will be cracked into 1000 pieces.

Once upon a time there lived a king named “VAMSAKETH” ruling the kingdom of VIJAYAPURA. His wife was “SATYAVRATHA”, she was the most beautiful lady among the women. King being much attracted never left her alone and ignored all his responsibilities of kingdom. The Minister of the kingdom was “THEERTHADARSHI”, he is a very loyal servant to king and hence he has taken care of kingdom greatly.

People of the kingdom who is not aware of kings doing thought that the minster has taken control over kingdom cheating the king. Minister knowing about peoples thought felt bad for him and left the kingdom. Then king has employed another Minister in his place and continued to be with the queen only as before.

Theerthadarshi, the old Minister of king had went over the world and finally reached a city which is near by to the ocean. There he makes friendship to a merchant, who makes business over trading on sea. One-day merchant wish to go on a trade and the old Minister wish to accompany him. Both of them travelled together and on the way in between the sea they see a KALIKA temple on an Island. The Island is having a lake and on its bank, they see a beautiful lady.

After completing the PUJA, rituals at the temple. Minister enquires the merchant about the beautiful lady. Merchant tells him that he knows nothing about her. Later they move on from the island, completed the trading and earns a lot of money.

The old Minister, wish to see his king again after his tour over the world. He travels back to the kingdom and king on seeing him asks why he left the kingdom. He explains the reasons for his behavior. Later late in the night when they are discussing about the world wonders, minister also tells about the beautiful women he saw. Minister praised the lady too much such that the king decided to marry her. He left the kingdom to minister again and went to the merchant asking to help him in seeing the women.

The king fells in love with the women he saw and asks her to marry him. The lady agrees to king and after few days on a night she leaves the king behind, walks into the dark in the island. King follows her and suddenly he saw that a demon swallows his wife on the bank of lake. King immediately kills the demon, cuts the stomach and takes his wife out. Then the lady explains king that she is a gandharva, and due to her fathers curse she is here. Her father says that her curse will be removed once the demon is killed by her husband who is king. Knowing this the king feels happy and travels back to the kingdom with his wife.

King forgetting the kingdom again continues to be with the queens in the fort itself. Finding no change in king, Minister commits suicide.

BETHAL Says: “ O King Vikramarka !!, Now you tell me- why did the minister die?”
Is it due to
1.       The king returned back? or
2.       The king married the lady who he liked before?

VIKRAMARKA Says : “BETHALA, it is minister’s mistake to tell about a new women knowing his kings weakness. Understanding his mistake Minister committed suicide”

Listening to the answer Bhethal flies again back to the tree.

King Vikramaditya with more patience gets on to the tree and takes Bhethal one more time on his shoulder. Starts his walk away from the tree. When Bhethal again starts telling one more story, O King..!! I will tell you a surprising story which you never heard. You have to answer after listening to the story or else your head will be cracked into 1000 pieces.

Once in a rich city named Mallikapuram, the king was SakataSrunga. He have a friend by name Karpataka, he used to assist his king in all ways at all times. King once went to deep forests for hunting when his friend also assisted. King has hunted many animals and got thirsty. He was unable to bear the thirst when his friend gave 2 goose berries and with them his thirst is satisfied. He went back to his kingdom safely.

One day king expressed his wish of marrying the daughter of King Kalinga to his friend and has asked for his help in convincing her father. His friend karpataka boarded a merchant ship in order to travel kingdom Kalinga, when the ship got a problem with storm. Ship was broken and everybody is drowned. Karpataka found a wire of plant and hanged to that, with the help of same he travelled to another world Nagalok. He went to Kanchanapuram in that world and found a Durga temple.

He also found that the ladies from that kingdom came there to pray the goddess. Among them he liked one and expressed his view to be conveyed near another maid of her. Maid thinking that he will be betrayed by her princess secretly told him to have bath in the nearby lake and come back. Karpataka became very happy and in joy went to have bath in the lake. Once he drowned and came up he was back in his native Mallikapura River.

With surprise and sadness in mind he told everything to his beloved king. Then king asked him to show the way how he went there as he wanted to see the lady whom he liked. Both of them started in a ship and reached the place as earlier. They travelled to Nagalok and then to the Kanchanapuram. They found the lady there and king told his friend that he never saw such a beautiful woman. The princess has saw both the young men and liked the king. She has asked him to marry her when the king told the princess that his friend is much handsome and intelligent than him to marry. He asked her to marry him instead. Princess accepted king’s advice and married Karpataka.

King told Karpataka that he has repaid the debt of one Goose Berry and still another is pending.

O King Vikramaditya…!!! Please tell know who among them is good in helping others? Bhethal asked.

King Vikramaditya answered saying the king is best as Karpataka serving his king is not a sacrifice but a responsibility. The way king advised the princess and got them married is a real sacrifice.

Accepting to the answer of King Bhethal flies back to tree.

Story of living 2000 years of Life- Bhatti Vikramarka

One day in heaven the dancers, Rambha and Urvashi made a conflict among themselves in concluding the best dancer. They approached king Indra for justice. King Indra arranges a competition for them in his court by inviting all the sages and Devathas. Both the dancers performed their best with more competitive spirit and kept all the spectators in justice of doubt. They have told the dancers that both of them are very good dancers and it can never be possible in choosing the best one among them. They asked them to be friendly with each other. But both of them didn’t accept the justice given and hence declared that they will not dance till the best is announced. Lord Indra was left in confusion.

Devarshi Narada arrives into the court of Lord Indra and asks the reason for their confused state. Indra explains him everything then Narada brings King Vikramaditya of Ujjain to his knowledge and tells that he is the most brilliant king. He advises to take his assistance in solving this riddle. Indra immediately sends his Invite to the king for attending his court as Judge. King Vikramaditya accepts the Invitation with pleasure and comes to DevaloK. King Indra explains his problem of declaring the best dancer to him. Vikramaditya says that he need time to resolve. Indra accepts it. Vikramaditya goes into the garden and prepares two garlands.

Next day all the courtiers assemble, when king Vikramaditya asks both the competitors Rambha and Urvashi to wear the garlands and dance. Both of them accepts the garland and wears them. They starts the competition and in the same way as before makes all other to think that no one else can dance better than them. Similarly no one concludes the best among them. Indra asks King Vikramaditya to give judgement. Vikramaditya Says “Urvashi is the Best dancer” explaining that the petals of garland didn’t get loose with her performance whereas Rambha has disturbed the petals of garland with her performance and they were dropped all over in the court.

Everyone accepts his Judgement and praises Urvashi for her performance. King Indra gifts Vikramaditya for his extraordinary brilliance with a golden throne of Salabhanjikas and blesses him to rule his kingdom for 1000 years on it. Vikramaditya happily returns back to Ujjain with the throne given and places it in Kalika temple. He takes the blessing of Kalika and returns to the palace. Knowing the arrival of his brother Bhatti approaches Vikramaditya.
King Vikramaditya tells the complete story and asks his brother to check for a good Muhoorth for throne establishment in court. Disappointed Bhatti says,  “ Dear Brother you forgot about me and didn’t bring anything for me.” Vikramaditya identifies himself for forgetting his own brother and apologizes him. They starts thinking for the channel to get a life of 1000 years to Bhatti as well. Bhatti decides to do penance for his 1000 years of life and starts it at the kalika temple.

Pleased Kali appears and asks his wish. Bhatti requests for 2000 years of life. Kalika tests him, by asking his brother Vikramaditya head for 2000 years of life. Bhatti approaches his brother and tells him everything happened. King vikramaditya asks him to take his head and get 2000 years of life. Bhatti does the same. Devi Kalika gets impressed and blesses him with the request. Bhatti laughs at the goddess and says my brother is blessed for 1000 years of kingdom but that word failed today. How come I can believe that my blessing is true. Devi Kalika again gets impressed by the intelligence of Bhatti and gives life to his brother.

Both of them returns back to the palace and thinks about their lives again. Bhatti says brother you will die before me which I cannot see and I have to live alone after you for another 1000 years. We must plan something to live together all the time. That night both of them are thinking about the same. Next day Bhatti advices his brother to rule kingdom for only six months in a year and another six months to go on a tour. In this way if he rules the kingdom he can also live for 2000 years along with him. King Vikramaditya remembers the words of Indra “ to rule the kingdom for 1000 years” and praises Bhatti for Intelligence.

In this way both the brothers lived for 2000 years and ruled the kingdom.

Story of ChandraVarna-Father of King Vikramaditya

In India there are many legends which brief the heroism of our kings and other brave people. Among them is one our King ChandraGupta who is well known as Vikramaditya. He is so called from his kings and emperors because of his strength and abilities in ruling his kingdom with justice all the time. Basing on his capabilities there are more known stories with morals along. He is well known with his brother Bhatti and is called as Bhatti- Vikramaarka.

Long Long back so Long back there was a village named Nandipuram and there lived a Brahmin, ChandraVarna who is a pandit by learning all Sastra’s and literature. He was not satisfied with the knowledge he possess and was enthusiastic to learn all which are available. Hence he decided to be as Brahmachari(Unmarried) till he becomes the one who has learned all the knowledge available. Deciding so he starts his search for such a Guru(teacher) across the states. Finding no one who satisfies his will he continues his journey from a forest. He becomes much exhausted from his journey, feels hungry and thirsty. He goes in search of water and finds a lake, drank it and takes rest below a tree.

A Very powerful demon which is living on that tree watches Chandravarna. This demon is so powerful that there is nothing away from its knowledge. It is doing sacrifice or offers to Lord Brahma from that tree for its MOKSHA. Such demon wakes up the Brahmin and asks why he was there. Chandra Varna explains his wish to the demon and his journey in search of the Guru. He also grasps that the demon is capable of giving the knowledge which is unknown to him and hence requests him to accept as his disciple.

Delighted demon accepts him as the disciple and says, “ I shall teach you all that are known to me. Don’t waste any of my time and learn with concentration. You can learn in time.” Chandravarna Says, “ Dear Guru, I will accept every difficulty to learn your teachings happily.”

Demon guru says that it will be sitting on the tree, will write his teachings on the leaves of tree and drop them for six months. Chandravarna  shall read all of them to gain complete knowledge all the six months, day and night without sleeping, having food, water. Even a day of interruption will make him angry and Chandravarna will fail to learn all the knowledge.

Chandravarna accepts the conditions of demon guru. Demon becomes happy because of his strong wish to learn and tells him a spell with which sleep, hunger and thirsty can be overcome. With the help of the spell chandravarna overcomes all the difficulties and gains all the knowledge from demon. Mean while the sacrifice of the demon comes to an end. His curse to take birth as demon goes away and he was enshrined with more power. Looking at the surprised Chandravarna, demon explains about his sacrifice and says that “you have gained all the knowledge in this world now and there is nothing left unknown. You can now go to your native and marry a beautiful woman, have a peaceful and happy life”. Saying so demon gets vanished to Brahma Lok.

Chandravarna starts from there to make his way home. Due to not having food and sleep from last six months he was very weak .He decides to go to any nearby village for having them. He reaches a beautiful house, and thinks that it belongs to a Brahmin. Expecting that he could have sufficient food and rest there, he approaches the house. But, no one is present at the house in that time and hence he rests at the front of the house with the leaves written by demon below his head.

That house belongs to a Devadashi, Alankaravalli who is very rich. She is good at dance and music. Late in the night she reaches her house from the temple and observes Chandravarna infront of her house. Chandravarna was unconscious even when she tried to wake him up. She observes the worse condition of chandravarna as he didn’t had food, bath anything from last six months. Though he was full of dirt in clothing she makes a note that he is bright with his knowledge and comes to a conclusion that he must be from a very good family.

She brings in a doctor for his treatment and helps him in making his health good. She works hard to bring him back to health and after many days he becomes conscious. He observes that the house belongs to a Temple dancer who is Veshya and decides to leave. Alankaravalli watches him recovering back from health and feels happy also she feels sad as he is leaving without even intimating her. She says“ O Dear Brahmin..!! How this is a way of thanking me? When you are leaving without intimation after my help, I cannot be without you and want you to marry me”. Chandravarna in response to her request says that “ she is like his mother as saved his life”. In this way they argument for long time and this case was brought before the king.

When the king asks the reason for heir dispute it is explained as followed by Chandravarna, “O King..!! I am Brahmin and is a scholar. I am on the way to my house and became sick. This Alankaravalli has helped me by saving life. Now she wanted me to marry her. How can I marry a Devadashi being a Brahmin, will the world accept it and how is that going as per our Dharmas?.

Then Alankaravalli explains herself to the King saying, “ King..!! everything said by Chandravarna is true. Though I belong to a veshya community everyone in the village knows the good attitude of me. I have loved this Brahmin and could not live without him. Kindly do the justice and I can live only basing on your justice”

King says the Brahmin that a women cannot be treated with injustice in his kingdom and for not over ruling the Dharma’s he suggests to marry all the Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vysya and Sudra women along. King who is already very well impressed by the Brahmin’s glow of knowledge and handsomeness decided in mind that he shall become the husband of her daughter. He also suggest the Asthana Pandit’s daughter , Vysya Somasekhara’s daughter. And as already Sudra women Alankaravalli and Kshatriya women daughter of king are ready to marry him. Marriage is done with all the four of them. Alankaravalli felt very happy of her marriage with the Brahmin Chandravarna.

They have all spent their time happily for years. Brahmin’s daughter gave birth to Pallavudu, Kings daughter gave birth to Vikramadithya , Vysya’s daughter gave birth to Bhatti, and Alankaravalli gave birth to Bharthruhari. They have learnt Vedas and have learnt all skills. Meanwhile the king who has no sons make Chandravarna as king and he has been ruling the kingdom in success. He makes all his sons to learn everything he knows.

When he is ready to handover the kingdom to his sons, he makes a call to all of them and says that “Alanakaravalli is the reason for marrying all their mothers and hence she is his first wife. Her son only have the right to become king, all of you have to support them in ruling the kingdom with justice”. All the sons accept it and the King Chandravarna rests in peace. Barthruhari and Pallava moves away for tapasya after ruling the kingdom for a while, making Vikramaditya as king our hero of these stories. Bhatti, his Brother is the wise person who becomes his minister. Both of them with their intelligence and courage had conquered many strong kingdoms. Their kingdom has spread till the Himalayas. Then they shifted their capital to Ujjain. There is a tale followed in next article which says how Vikramaditya and Bhatti ruled their kingdom for 2000 years with the gifted throne of 32 Salabhanjika’s.
